THE 2006 New Year's Flower Fair opened to the public free of charge yesterday at the Shanghai Agricultural Exhibition Hall.
More than 100 companies will display more than 200 flower species at the four-day fair.
"The four traditional flowers for the New Year celebration, including authurium, pineapple flower, cymbidium hyridus and butterfly orchid, are expected to be challenged by peonies and colored calla this year," said Yang Bo, secretary- general of the Shanghai Flower Association.
According to the association, more than 10,000 pots of colored callas, nearly 8,000 pots of peonies and many slipper orchids will be sold at the fair.
Because peonies were very popular last year, Shandong Heze Peony Garden, which comes from the hometown of the peony, and the Pudong Peony Garden both attended the fair. The Pudong garden is selling one pot of the flowers for 580 yuan (US$72), as welling as selling calligraphy and drawings based on the flowers.
Chongming narcissus, which enjoys the same high reputation as Zhangzhou narcissus in Fujian Province, is also on sale this year. The narcissus is known for its strong fragrance, and beautiful shape. they sell for about 10 yuan each. In addition to the flower exhibition, the committee will organize a wedding ceremony performance to display flowers that can be used at marriages.
"I come here to buy some flowers to decorate my home for the upcoming Spring Festival," said Liu Meijuan, a retired woman who was one of few visitors to the fair yesterday. Organizers expect a bigger crowd over the weekend.
