Take the pulse of TCM
Created: 2006-01-01 CST, Updated: 2006-01-01 CST
To most Westerners and perhaps some Chinese as well, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) seems to be magical for the "wizardry" of its use of different herbs and acupuncture.
Community Center Shanghai, a non-profit organization helping expatriates adapt to life in the city, is arranging a visit on January 11 to Tong Han Chun, a famous TCM clinic and herbal medicine shop, for those who want a close-up look at China's traditional medical culture.
A guided visit to Tong Han Chun will let visitors experience a half day at the clinic, see the layout, see the way in which TCM diagnoses are made and learn procedures for preparing herbal remedies.
If you want to try the traditional medicine but do not know how, this trip will be most helpful.
The tour guide Dr Zhang is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist who has lived and worked in the United Kingdom and the United States and now is a professor at the Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine University.
Visitors will learn about diagnostic methods of traditional Chinese medicine — wang (observation), wen (discerning odor), wen (inquiring) and qie (feeling the pulse).
